When I was a freshman at Grove City College, I decided to be in orchestra. What was I thinking? I thought it would be an easy A, and I did get an A. But there were two concerts in the Spring, and the music was not easy and required much practicing. I enjoyed the other flutists, but quickly discovered I would not be in orchestra again. I was so nervous playing with the other flutes, because I was the only one who was not a music major. I did not want to play the flute and think, "Drill! Drill! Drill! Drill!" as my 8th grade flute teacher often told me to do. I play the flute to enjoy playing. No, I'm not perfect, and I try to do my best, but being in orchestra was not for me.
I was pleasantly surprised to find out that my favorite yarn store is owned by the GCC's orchestra conductor's wife. :)
What was your least favorite subject in school?
That's good that you didn't give up playing the flute because of that experience. Music can bring such joy to one's life!
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed playing the flute in my school years. I wish I would of stuck with it for personal enjoyment because I've since forgotten reading music and all. That's great you still play!
ReplyDeleteI wish I could play piano. I took a piano class in college and I tried hard but I had a hard time learning ona keyboard and then doing my final on a grand piano!
ReplyDeleteYeah, it kind of takes the fun out of it. I enjoyed playing trumpet and I didn't have that kind of pressure on me. I've cracked notes and nobody cares.
ReplyDeleteMy son played flute and trumpet in band, and he loved it too. I did the orchestra thing as well---"encouraged" by my mother. I sought to please her. I played violin but never got beyond beginner. What a coincidence about the LYS owner.
ReplyDeleteI played the violin in elementary school, I wish I would have continued playing. I had a lot of pressure put on my by my music teacher and was overwhelmed causing me to quit. I wish I would have persevered like you! :)
