What I Think About Our Current Educational System {Autumn Blog Challege}

I used to want to be a teacher, but my first semester at college, I discovered it was not for me.  I partially blame the education department, they expected the students to only teach in public schools.  Umm, no thank you.  I went to a Christian school and despite the things I disliked, I wanted to teach in a Christian school.  I also wanted to be a wife and a mother, but at GCC it seemed that was unusual.  You're here to get an education, why would you want to stay home with your children.

I believe it's up to the parents how there children are to be educated, whether public school, private school, or home school.  God has entrusted children to their parent's care.  Our first two choices for Charis are homeschooling or Christian school; ultimately, it depends where we live and what our finances are at that point.  Our last choice is sending her to a Public school.

Two resources I like are:
Dumbing Us Down by John Taylor Gatto
Waiting for Superman DVD

What are your thoughts on the educational system in America?

  1. I could write a book... but I won't. :) Love both your resources and highly recommend both.

    We've homeschooled our children for the past 20 years and have loved every moment of it! Yes, it is up to parents as the Lord has given us the responsibility of training them up; making wise choices regarding the forming of our children's minds is paramount. As Voddie Baucham says in his lectures on home ed, every student will be like his teacher, which, of course, places a heavy burden on parents no matter what their educational choices are for their children.

    Our first child attended public school through 2nd grade. We decided he was done when we attended the end of the year assembly and watched as he and his classmates performed an native American dance and song and sang "the earth is our mother, she takes good care of us..." That was it for us.

    I'll quit before this becomes any longer. Sorry for going on and on! Blessings, ~Lisa
