Funky Fluff {Giveaway}

This sponsored post is a collaboration between Funky Fluff, The Pierogie Mama and That Mama Gretchen, We are thrilled to share our cloth diaper love because we're truly floored by these exceptional diapers. Enjoy, and don't miss the amazing giveaway!

There's something new in the cloth diaper world, friends ... I've raved about Funky Fluff before and today I'm thrilled to share about their new release ... the Funky Fluff Fusion Bamboo 3-in-1 System 2.0! Best of all The Pierogie Mama and I have teamed up for this grand debut and it includes a super thorough review (we've seriously tested every dimension of this diaper) and a big, no, ginormous giveaway!
First off, we want to share a bit of the heart behind Funky Fluff, because companies with a purpose and passion speak volumes to us. Funky Fluff was founded by Kathy and Tricia, long time friends with a passion for cloth diapering. They "live, breathe and LOVE cloth diapering" and it's their goal to help other mamas be successful in cloth diapering their children. Together, Kathy and Tricia have cloth diapered 4 boys and have grown their home based, Canadian business through tons of hard work. And their commitment to quality products obviously hasn't stopped since they're debuting a 2.0 version of their popular bamboo cloth diaper. Ready to relish in all the features of the 2.0?
Now, a little introduction before our official reviews ... between us both we've tried almost 30 different brands of cloth diapers between our 3.5 children (Gretchen's daughter and son and Bianca's daughter and sweet bump due in March). So, when we say we like a certain feature or really trust something about a diaper, we're not joking. We've got A LOT of comparison power. That's probably why we're so excited to share Funky Fluff's 2.0 with you!
First up, Bianca's thoughts ...
I've got a pretty trim little miss - at 21 months old, she just tipped the scale at 23 lbs and is about 31 1/2 inches tall. She's a perfectly proportioned little doll, and her smallish stature has been both a blessing and a difficulty. I love how long clothes last for this girl - she's still wearing 12 month zippies!
But fitting diapers around her waist in proportion to her height has become a difficulty with her night time diaper, as she still wets a lot at night and you've got to find that right balance of fluff and stuff to make sure you can make it through the night.
I've been loving the Funky Fluff Bamboo line (both the 1.0 and 2.0s) because the bamboo liner and inserts are extremely thirsty. Parched. When she started to leak out through her 'tried and true' night time diapers that had been working for us for over 12 months, I tried the Bamboo Fusion 1.0's and was immediately relieved! After stripping and repairing velcro (the next step was re-doing elastic that I really don't think needs it), I was almost ready to try 'sposies.
Admittedly I was a little apprehensive when the 2.0 version dropped the double gusset feature (because she's also a side sleeper) but I quickly learned that it wasn't the double gusset that was saving my biscuits in the middle of the night - it was that awesome bamboo material! Zero leaks and no changes through out the night = a well rested Penny and this preggy mama. Our night time diaper solution is a Funky Fluff Bamboo Fusion 2.0 stuffed with one heavy duty bamboo soaker or a light bamboo soaker with booster.
And while I have your ear can I tell you how much I love the soakers? They are SO dense yet thin - they are by far my favorite stuffer for diapers because they hold so much liquid.
And now, a bit from Gretchen ...
Before Max was born, I thought I knew almost everything about cloth diapers. I mean, I'd cloth diapered Jemma for 34 months and gone through many successes and failures as we narrowed down what worked best for us. Then I had a son and I began the learning curve all over again!
Max is almost 17 months and is about to tip the scales at 32 pounds. Pretty much the opposite of Bianca's petite Penny. If I've learned anything about diapering both a son and daughter, I've learned that they pee different (obviously) and this therefore, requires different features to adequately do their job. Funky Fluff covers the gamut thanks to their bamboo lining and inserts in their 3-in-1 system.
It's definitely hard to find cloth diapers that do their job for chubbier babies. I need a high rise to prevent top leaks and large enough leg elastic that hold without leaving marks. Right now Max wears his Funky Fluff on the widest waist setting. But I'm not worried about outgrowing our Fluff since he's really starting to run and will most likely gain more height and less weight in the coming year.
I won't speak too much to the thirst of the bamboo - Bianca sang that praise - but I will say that we too ALWAYS opt for an extra stuffed Funky Fluff 2.0 for naps and long car rides. I will add that there is nothing softer than a bamboo diaper. So, between the amazing absorbency and the gentle fabric, I pretty much want our whole stash of diapers to be filled with Funky Fluff's bamboo 2.0 diapers.
My only hope and recommendation for Funky Fluff is that they'll launch a trainer/pull-up cloth diaper design by the time we're ready for that transition. I would LOVE to see a pull-up design with bamboo inside and PUL outside ... maybe even a bamboo padded underwear. Wouldn't that be awesome?
Ready to add some Funky Fluff to your cloth diaper stash? We couldn't encourage you more - you won't be disappointed! You can purchase the Fusion Bamboo 3-in-1 System 2.0 here, or consider saving with the purchase of a bundle. Still on the fence? Maybe consider a Starter Kit so you can compare the bamboo and stay dry options while testing out the reinforcing soakers and boosters.
And now, what you've all been holding your breath for ... the amazing giveaway to celebrate the launch of the 2.0 version of the Funky Fluff Fusion Bamboo 3-in-1 System! Funky Fluff is giving away a 10 pack of the 2.0 in your choice of boy, girl or gender neutral colors. Ohmygoodness, amazing, right?
Enter below and share within your social media circles with #funky10pack ... we can't wait to announce a winner! What a wonderfully fluffy new year one lucky mama and baby will have!

Juliette's Dress PDF Sewing Pattern {Review}

Disclosure: I got this product as part of an advertorial.

As a mother to a girl, I have been very concerned with many of the outfits that are sold in stores for girls, especially since my daughter is currently in 5T. As a result, I have decided that I want to try to get better at sewing, so that I don't have to rely on buying clothes at many department stores.

Juliette’s Dress, designed by Lily Bird Studio
is a vintage inspired dress. It is built-in panels with a rounded neck line and an opening at the back which makes it perfect for hot summer days. It has a fully lined bodice. It closes at the back with 2 small buttons or snap buttons. This sewing pattern provides the instructions to make a petticoat which makes this design look much better.
This pattern provides two options for sewing the dress; I chose option A, which has a full front panel, 2 front-side panels, 2 back panels, and 2 back-side panels. The dress is lined at the top, until it reaches the waist.

When I received this pattern, I liked that I was able to print everything out immediately, though I did have problem printing the pattern itself. I think my trouble happened because I was using a laser printer. I liked that the pattern has a wonderful tutorial to go with it; there are photographs of every single step. This helped me tremendously since I'm more of a visual learner.

The biggest drawback for me with this pattern is that the letters did not print in alphabetical order, and there were two "H's", so after that the letters were messed up. I ended up laying the pieces in a grid on the bed and cutting them out based that way.

I received one or more of the products mentioned above for free using Tomoson.com
Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers.

Homemade Laundry Detergent and Fels-Naptha {Review}

I have been wanting to make my own laundry soap for awhile. When I was accepted to become a Purex Insider and saw they were looking for people to test a Fels-Naptha bar, I applied. Fels-Naptha
is a powerful laundry bar that works overtime to remove greasy, oily stains, perspiration, and ring-around-the-collar. With over 100 years of removing America’s stains, you can rest assured that this laundry bar knows how to tackle your toughest stains.
I was able to make a batch of laundry detergent. It's SO easy, I don't know why I waited so long to make it.

Directions:

Grate the Fels-Naptha bar. It was chunkier than I wanted, so I then put it in an old food processor to make it a finer powder.

After grating.

After going through the food processor.
Add 1 cup washing soda {make sure you get washing soda-not baking soda} and 1 cup borax. Mix thoroughly. You can even add some essential oils; I added wild orange and lemon essential oils to this batch.

When using the detergent to wash clothes, use 2-3 Tbsp. If you want to add an extra boost to your wash, add some oxy-clean.

Other uses for Fels-Naptha:
  • Pretreating stains: Wet stain with water. Rub Fels-Naptha on stain. Sit for a few minutes. Wash garment as usual. I did this recently with my daughter's sweater. She got chocolate milk on her white hood-don't ask me how. I forgot about the stain. When I went to wash her clothes a few days later, I was mad at myself for being absent minded. I made the hood damp,
  • Laundry booster: Grate part of the soap into the wash and wash as usual.
Have you ever made homemade laundry detergent?

Babyville Boutique Review

I love DIY projects, especially if it involves sewing or knitting, and often swing by Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft stores when I'm grocery shopping. One of my favorite products to buy at Jo-Ann's is Babyville Boutique sewing supplies. Check out my previous review.

Babyville Boutique
was “born” when a new generation of parents embraced an emerging lifestyle trend of wanting healthier and environmental friendly products for their baby.  As more families became conscience of this lifestyle choice, many creative moms began sewing cloth diapers for their babies and toddlers for both social and economic reasons.
Babyville started out selling coordinated cloth diapering supplies, but they have expanded their repertoire. Babyville Boutique designers have been busy creating new books and writing tutorials online for their blog.

Babyville Boutique graciously offered to send me a box of their new supplies. I definitely squealed when I received this box below; it was full of their new supplies. I received a package of Little birds and chevron assorted PUL, Sweet assortment pink and lavender wicking fabric, Sweet girl design snaps, Little bird and heart labels, pink and white ruffled elastic, scalloped pink and white fold over elastic, plus 51 PUL Projects book and two packages of buttons which are not pictured.

I decided to make a small AI2 diaper.

Using Babyville's small diaper pattern, I cut one layer of wicking fabric and PUL for the diaper.

And added my embellishment. Since I was using PUL, I used the sewing method which is explained in the 51 Babyville Boutique Projects. They write "Position applique onto fabric using a fabric glue stick."

I used a zig zag stitch to apply the applique, but when I do them again, I'll use a straight stitch. I think it might look neater.

This was my first time sewing PUL and wicking fabric together. It seemed like a NIGHTMARE, but that's not Babyville's fault, it's mine. I am not used to sewing both of these fabrics together. I quickly found that the fabric was seriously sliding. Here are a two tips that might help you out:

  1. Use hair clips/boppy pins, instead of sewing pins. This equals less holes in the PUL.
  2. Use a washable glue stick to temporarily baste the layers together.
Sadly, I do not have a photo of the finished project. I had the wrong size die tray and shaft on my pliers. The other sizes are at home, and I've been visiting family for the last week. Hopefully when I get home I'll be able to finish the diaper and post the picture on this blog and Twitter.

I continue to enjoy Babyville Boutique supplies, especially their new prints that came out within the last 6 months.

Don't forget to enter a giveaway for $35+ of Babyville Boutique sewing supplies.

What's your favorite Babyville Boutique product?
Have you ever sewn your own cloth diapers?

Maize Fingerless Gloves {Yarn Along}

I am over halfway finished with my brother's Christmas gift-Maize Fingerless Gloves. He broke his wrist late summer in a bike accident, had surgery, and now has to wear a brace. Over Thanksgiving he told me, "The only gloves I can wear right now are fingerless gloves because of my brace." I had already planned to knit him these gloves and did not know this fact. I am knitting them with Ella Rae Classic Superwash yarn. I bought it on Black Friday {along with 5 different other yarns} from Wolf Creek Yarns in Grove City for 30% off its regular price.

doTERRA On Guard Beadlets {Giveaway}

My least favorite time of year is here: late fall/winter. It's the time where sickness increases. In order to try to stay healthy, I try to drink water, eat healthy food, and wash my hands. This year, I have learned about doTERRA On Guard BeadletsOn Guard Beadlets are an easy and convenient way to obtain the immune-boosting benefits of On Guard Essential Oil Blend. The beadlets are covered with vegetable oil that melts in your mouth; they contain these essential oils:
  • Wild orange: contains anti-fungal, anti-bacterial and antidepressant properties. Effective against flu and colds and recommended in early stages.
  • Clove: has immune enhancing properties
  • Cinnamon: has antiseptic properties
  • Eucalyptus: helps support the respiratory system. Also has anti-viral and anti-bacterial properties.
  • Rosemary: helps restore mental alertness
Overall, I thought the taste was a wee bit strong, but I'm still taking them at times as a precaution, especially when my daughter had a cold. I took them for 3 days until she was getting over her symptoms, and no, I did not get her cold. The vegetable oil melted, but not completely, I would pull it out of my mouth after getting the essential oils; I'd love to try doTERRA's On Guard Essential Oil Protective Blend. I liked how convenient these are. I'm able to keep them in my purse and have them on the go.

The product I reviewed and the giveaway prize was provided by My Natural Family
and will be shipped to the winner by My Natural Family.

Currently

Thinking about {pondering} what item{s} I should make out of the box of Babyville Boutique products. The choices are endless, but I need to be finished sewing no later than Wednesday. Decisions, decisions...

Also, I'm trying not to be worried about the possibility of getting sick on the way to my parents. Two years ago, when we were still 2 1/2 from my parents, I was sick at the side of the road. It was HORRIBLE. I wanted to turn around and go home, but Drew refused {thankfully}. We were halfway there, plus they were wonderful in waking up when I called and asked them to come and get "the baby" {15 month old}. Charis LOVED that Thanksgiving; she was doted on by my siblings and their spouses.

Reading The Street Lawyer by John Grisham. Well technically, I'm listening to it when I'm driving in the car. I'm only 25% of the way through it; hopefully, I'll update you more on it later.

Watching NCIS. Yes. I love watching NCIS. I'm sure people who work in government hate it, much like I dislike most medical dramas *cough* ER *cough*. But since it's not job related, I enjoy watching it immensely.

Thankful for my family. Praying for the trip we'll be taking to see them for Thanksgiving. Thankful that my parents and in-laws live in the same town, which helps make holidays easier, since we don't have to go to two places hours apart in a short amount of time.

I'm linking up at A Mama Collective

This Moment

Pictureless. My camera batteries are getting recharged, and I hope to post the picture tomorrow.

The afternoon was spent knitting fingerless mitts to give as a Christmas gift to my sister in law. They're knit with Mochi Plus yarn. Overall, I am thrilled with this yarn; it's so soft and the colors are vivid. I hope my SIL and sister are not turned off by the mitts being fraternal twins, instead of identical. I like the variation, but I'm not sure if they'd like it.

Thankfulness Thursday

:Charis told me she is thankful for her "ducky" and happy meals. Yes, I took her to McDonalds. Shes has been doing VERY well going potty, and I wanted to give her a happy meal. No, we do not go McDonalds often, but she knows what the golden arches stand for. She received a "ducky" as part of her happy meal. The good news is once she saw "ducky", she forgot about eating her chemical-laden "food". FYI, the "ducky" is actually a penguin, but Charis insists that it's a duck.

:I'm thankful that my salvation is not a result of feeding my daughter an occasional fast food outing vs. making everything from scratch. Salvation is found in CHRIST ALONE. Yes, I breastfed, used cloth diapers, try to cook mostly from scratch, etc. but if I let these define who I am, especially to the point of looking down on someone who does not do these things, then I'm sinning. Doing these things does not make me better or worse than the next person, and I need to stop thinking {and saying} that I am a bad mom when my daughter had formula or when we used a disposable diaper on her or when I take her to eat fast food.

What are you thankful for?

Thankful for our Followers

I have finally opened up an Etsy shop. It's something I have wanted to do for awhile, but I kept coming up with "reasons" {AKA excuses} not to. It's called Gortree Road Creations, and right now it only has three items listed.

You may be wondering, "Where did you get the name?" Gortree Road was the road my grandparents lived on in Northern Ireland. Here's a small piece of trivia: Gortree means "the field of the gallows." We have no clue why it's called that.

My Granny would send us hand knit and machine knit sweaters that she made for birthdays and Christmases. The summers I would spend in Northern Ireland were often spent picking up knitting needles again and reminding myself how to knit. Never mind the fact that it would often be 2+ years since I had previously knit. Because of this, I originally thought to name myself "Gortree Road Knits", but I did not want to limit myself if I decided to add more products.

For this giveaway, I will be giving away a pair of newborn Santa Claus hand knit wool longies. They are already lanolized and ready to put on a baby. Giveaway is OVER.

Winner: Samantha Y.

Christmas Gifts: Christina Mitts {Yarn Along}

I cast off the My striped & slouchy hat I knit last week, but there's no photograph because I still need to block it. Note to self: MUST do that before this weekend.

I started knitting Christina mitts for a Secret Santa handmade gift exchange I'm taking part in; I always have a hard time knowing what handmade items to give someone I don't know. Overall, I'm happy with how they're turning out, but if I knit them again, I'm definitely knitting a thumb gusset. I'm using size 7 needles like the pattern calls for, except for the top ribbing where I'm using size 6 needles instead.

I haven't been doing too much reading lately due to a knitting surge because of Christmas.

Are you ready?!

The Tuesday after Thanksgiving - the frenzy starts! We are giving away a very awesome and beautiful Woven Mei Tai - The Didymos Didy Tai valued at $190. Residents of US and Canada.
This giveaway is unique. The Didymos Didy Tai is a wonderful marriage between a woven wrap and a Buckle carrier. It's Super fast (and easy to learn) like the buckle carrier and snugly like a wrap. The DidyTai (or wrap-tai) has a criss-cross back for weight support. This is the only Mei Tai style carrier that Caribou Baby recommends for newborns because of the tremendous back support - and the ability to carry the baby legs out in a deep squat - from day 1.
The DidyTai is versatile. Its toggle base allows for a great newborn hold and for the mobility of an older baby.

Other features of the Didy Tai include:
  • Reversible two-color carrier
  • Anatomically correct squat-spread-position
  • Special, diagonally stretchable cloth
  • Lightweight and handy
  • Free from any toxic materials
  • Pure organic cotton
  • Non-toxic dyes
  • Made in Germany
  • Machine washable
  • Long-lasting and resistant
The giveaway begins on December 4th. Make sure you sign up for my RSS feed so that you are reminded about this giveaway.

First Cara Box

When I was younger, one of my favorite things was sending and receiving letters. I had at least six different pen pals from various places in the country and world-3 in the US, 1 from Canada, 1 from Northern Ireland {a second cousin}, and 1 in France. When I saw Wifessionals organizes a quarterly e-mail/gift box exchange, I decided to jump at the chance. This was my first time participating. We are given two people to communicate with. The first, we are to get to know them and send a package to that individual. The second, we get to know them and receive a package from her.

Amy from New Mom Problems sent me my box. Upon opening it, I noticed that everything comes from Target. I LOVE Target! It's one of my favorite stores, and I go there at least weekly. In my box, I received

  • A notebook. I collect notebooks/journals. It's so much fun {and embarrassment} to see what I read, was struggling with, learned, etc.
  • Pumpkin spice coffee. Gotta have my cup of jo.
  • An Autumn Harvest candle. The scent is amazing, but I have not started burning it because I want to finish my pumpkin candle.
  • A pumpkin tea towel
  • And CHOCOLATE. Sadly, it's all gone.

I sent a box over to Natalie; she blogs at Sweetie's Studio. If you want to see what I sent her and her thoughts, read here.

Overall, I had a good experience with the Cara Box and hope to sign up again on December 2.
