An Update on Life and Knitting

My daughter has been at my in-law's house for almost two weeks. December 7th, she left Maryland and went back to visit Grandma and Grandpa. The plan was for her to come back this past Monday, but on Sunday morning, her grandmother found her lying in her vomit on the bed. It turned out she woke up sometime during the night, was sick, and instead of getting one of my in-laws, she went back to bed. They decided to keep her home from church. Around 1:10 PM, Drew had a call from his mom. Charis had developed a fever and her temperature was 103 degrees. If she had been home with us, I would have given her Tylenol and called her doctor, but she was five hours away. We decided she should go to an urgent care clinic. Once at the clinic, I had to give my mother-in-law Charis's insurance information. FYI, in the future, I plan on copying my children's insurance cards and giving the copies to my in-laws so they have copies in cases like these. It turns out, Charis had the flu caused by influenza A. She's finally feeling like herself, but she'll remain in PA through Christmas. On Saturday, Lil' J. and I will join her. Drew is staying in Maryland over Christmas, since he still has more data collection for his dissertation.

Old Factory Candle Gift Set #Review #Giveaway

One of my favorite decorations are candles, especially during the winter when it's cold, dark, and dreary outside. A reward I often give myself for daily wiping the bathroom sink is lighting a candle afterwards. They make homes much more homey.

Ribbed Baby Longies

I started knitting a pair of ribbed baby longies for my niece. My sister told me that she wears 2T clothes, but when I saw M. at Thanksgiving, there was NO way the longies I started to knit would stay up on her. So I went back to the drawing board. I am not unraveling the longies, instead I'll finish knitting them later for someone else. I went back into my stash yarn and picked out Paton's classic wool {New denim, Wisteria, and Royal purple} and Cascade 220 paints {Denim storm}. Cast on 88. K1P1 ribbing. Included an eyelet row since my niece is so skinny and my need to have an i cord to keep the pants up. Each side has P1K1 ribbing for 11 stitches.

Uno, Dos, Tres, Posada! #Review

Charis loves reading and enjoys learning Spanish. Her father helped give her the desire to learn another language. Drew has his Bachelor's degree in French, Spanish, and Political Science and received his Master's degree in Spanish translation. When Drew does not want Charis to pick up on what he is saying, he speaks to me in Spanish. Charis wants to be like daddy and learn Spanish. As a result, I have gone to the library to check out books, CDs, and DVDs to help informally educate her.

With Christmas coming, I decided to check out Uno, Dos, Tres, Posada! Let's Celebrate Christmas by Virginia Knoll. Throughout the book, the author uses the format, "I say uno and you say one." Following each rhyming phrase, a Spanish word or phrase is introduced to the reader. The illustrations and context allow the reader to easily understand the Spanish word or phrase.

At the end of the book, Virginia included an author's not explaining that "A posada is a party that is held on each of the nine nights before Christmas (Navidad)." She then goes on to write about the activities that happen leading up to the posada and what you would expect to see and taste during the party.

This book is perfect for pre-school aged children. I highly recommend it, especially if you want to introduce your child to Spanish this time of year.

Nine Naturals #Giveaway

Welcome to our week-long giveaway that we are co-hosting with a fabulous group of mommy bloggers from across the United States and Canada. We are very excited to be giving away toxic-free goodies from Brooklyn (New York) based company Nine Naturals. Forward-thinking Nine Naturals make personal products which are smart and safe for moms and moms-to-be. They craft their products using only natural and organic ingredients, which include shampoo, conditioner, moisturizer, deodorant, body wash, sunscreen and lip balm. Mommy Beware For a health conscious mother or mother-to-be, most of us are well aware as to the dangers of eating genetically modified foods and foods sprayed with pesticides. We are aware of the dangers of drinking coffee, consuming alcohol, or smoking during pregnancy, and so many other things. However, not a lot of attention is spent on the dangers of slathering disease-causing chemicals and endocrine disruptors on our bodies, which are found in most mainstream personal products. Especially, as these are used on a daily basis! The skin is the largest organ, and it aptly absorbs whatever is put on it very quickly, traveling into the blood stream, moving around the body, and of course this can affect a fragile fetus growing inside. So What is Available and Safe to use during pregnancy

Thinking about Thanksgiving and Christmas!!! This is my FAVORITE time of the year. I have been torturing my husband by playing Christmas on and off music since July. Knitting projects for my nieces and nephew have commenced. Actually, my nephew's is finished. It's just my two nieces' gifts that I need to complete.

We're looking forward to seeing our immediate {and extended} families this week. On Thursday, we'll be at my parent's house for Thanksgiving-having traditional American Thanksgiving food. On Friday, we'll be at my mother-in-law's house eating Italian food for our second Thanksgiving meal.

Kitty Baby Slippers #YarnAlong

I have started knitting both of my nieces their Christmas gifts, and better yet, the great thing about knitting for babies/toddlers is they don't need a lot of yarn for their projects. So, stash busting it is.

K. will {hopefully} receive a pair of kitty baby slippers. I write "hopefully" because I have to felt them and if they felt to be too small, I'll just have to give them to another baby. I knit both soles. Unfortunately, once I started knitting the main part on one of the slippers, I ran out of yarn. Since the slippers are a gift for someone else, I am going to buy more yarn at JoAnn Fabrics.

I am knitting a pair of longies for M. On her Christmas list, her parents wrote she needed some leggings. I found some yarn {Patons classic wool and Cascade 220} that I'm going to use for her project. The waistband is pink, the body of the pants will be knit in birds of paradise, and the legs will be stripes of turquoise and black.

What's on your needles?

Currently enjoying a visit with my in-laws. They made a five hour trek to visit us-or really, visit our children. Lil' J has been wooing them with his smile. Charis spent the night with them at their hotel and went swimming with Grandma this morning.

Tonight, I went to the library and swung through the Starbucks drive through without my children. I love them, but must admit, it was nice to go to the library and quickly get what I went for. I tried the Chestnut Praline Latte tonight; it was so delicious, much, much better than the Pumpkin Spiced Latte.

Pineapple Chicken Curry #Recipe

Remember the Chiquita Cooking Lab Recipe Contest I wrote about in October? I submitted a recipe to Chiquita over a week ago. The three ingredients for the week I submitted my recipe were: Pineapple, Spinach, and Bananas. The first thing that came to my mind was, "I need to make a smoothie recipe, but that's the obvious thing to make." I was then reminded of the vast array of foods my aunt made for my Grandad's 90th birthday. My favorite dish was a pineapple curry recipe. Unfortunately, I did not get the recipe from her. Then, I decided to come up with a recipe for a curry dish. Bananas did not go in the dish itself, instead they were a garnish on top of the curry.

21 Day Walk Challenge

Before children I used to love Daylight Savings Time-but now, I very much dislike it. Before DST, after Charis and Justin woke up from their naps, we often walked to the park. Justin rode in the stroller, and I brought a jump rope to work out while Charis was playing at the playground and swings. But now since it gets darker, it is often too late to walk to the park.

On Monday morning, I saw Leslie Sansone posted a 21 Day Walk Challenge on her Facebook page. Woohoo!! This is just what I needed. I hope to get back into taking my children for walks, but I need to find the time that now best suits our needs. Monday afternoon, after both children woke up, we went to the library to borrow the DVDs suggested in this week's workout.

My First Soaker #YarnAlong

First hand knit soaker made by me in 2010.
As a little girl, I remember visiting my granny in Northern Ireland. I loved watching her knit. I remember asking my granny, "Will you teach me how to knit?" She taught me the garter stitch. When I went home that summer, every now and then I would knit. But distance wise, I was not close to granny and my new knitting skill slowly dwindled.

In college, I picked up knitting again. My first year of nursing school, I even knit a few scarves as Christmas gifts, but thought, "Knitting is boring." Looking back, I realize I was bored with knitting the garter stitch all the time. I did not seek to expand my skills.

Sitting Still During Church

Drinking her Nesquik
We have been working with Charis on sitting still in her seat and listening to what is being said during church. She, like any active four year old, is not always very good at this. There are some Sundays where we are up and down over and over again-taking her to the bathroom, taking her out of church, and helping her refocus her attention.

01 November 2014

Yesterday was Halloween: it was my daughter's first time trick or treating-or in our case trunk or treating. In the past, we have never gone trick or treating. Charis's first three Halloweens were spent at our church Reformation party. Last year, we did not have a Reformation party, but I was in Pennsylvania, at my parents' house on Halloween.

This was the first year we did not have any other obligations. The last few weeks I have been "slaving" away on my child's costumes. Okay, I joyfully knit them.

Kitty Hat #Yarn Along

On Saturday night, I told my mother, "I'll be finished with Charis's kitty hat by Tuesday." Unfortunately, I have not cast off yet. I finished one of the ears, It will take less than 30 minutes to finish the other ear. I am not looking forward to weaving in all the ends.

Other than water, one of my favorite beverages to drink is tea, especially chai tea. Since going to Uganda in 2006, I am very particular about the taste of my chai teas. My favorite brand is Tazo organic chai. In the past, I have tried putting together spices and making real, homemade tea, but the results have always been wanting. You can often find me drinking tea and knitting at night after my children go to bed. Do you drink anything when you knit?

The many library books I need to take back to the library ASAP! Please tell me I'm not the only one who should have a library wing named after them. Sadly, I have library fines I need to pay and can not borrow any more books until those fines are paid. So, off to the library they will go.

Preschool Books: From Sheep to Yarn

Lately, my daughter has been interested in everything related to knitting, such as yarn, needles, gauge swatches, patterns stitches. She has asked many questions, "How is yarn made? How do you knit?" I told her, "Yarn comes from sheep." Charis was even more puzzled. I took my daughter to the library in search of children's books to help answer some of her questions. I am doing a very informal unit study with Charis about processing wool-from sheep to yarn. How wool becomes yarn for preschoolers.

Kitty Hat and Guest Posting #YarnAlong

I started knitting Charis the "Kitty Hat", but I have not gotten very far because caring for my son and nourishing him is more important than knitting. On Halloween, Charis will dress up as Hello Kitty. For Charis's birthday, Aunt Jen and Uncle Robbie gave her a Hello Kitty shirt. I bought Hello Kitty fabric at Jo-Ann Fabric to sew her a skirt, and I'm knitting her a kitty hat. Once the hat is finished, I plan on embroidering eyes and attaching a knit bow on the hat.

Reminded of My Weakness

Saturday night, my 5 month old woke up not once, but five times. 8 AM Sunday, I cried. It was officially the fifth time he woke up since 12 AM, and he was not going back to sleep. Drew helped out and got up with Charis and the baby.

Sunday night, Lil' J woke up four times. That is not including the two times I finished nursing him, put him back in his crib, and he woke up crying again within 10 minutes. Both of those times, I picked him back up and nursed him again on both breasts. Monday morning, I was exhausted, impatient, and felt like I was losing my mind.

Currently {October 20, 2014}

Brief recap of our life currently: On Saturday, we had our church picnic. It was cold and windy. I was so thankful that I brought a hat and cardigan for Lil' J. My daughter did NOT want to wear her jacket. Most of the evening I let her get her way, but about 30 minutes before leaving, I firmly told her, "Put it on." She obeyed, but as she put it on, she said, "I'm not cold."

At the picnic, one of the games involved a pair of disguise glasses. Charis was given a pair of glasses after the picnic. Yesterday before church, I had fun putting them on my son and taking a picture of the little cutie.
