An Update on Life and Knitting

My daughter has been at my in-law's house for almost two weeks. December 7th, she left Maryland and went back to visit Grandma and Grandpa. The plan was for her to come back this past Monday, but on Sunday morning, her grandmother found her lying in her vomit on the bed. It turned out she woke up sometime during the night, was sick, and instead of getting one of my in-laws, she went back to bed. They decided to keep her home from church. Around 1:10 PM, Drew had a call from his mom. Charis had developed a fever and her temperature was 103 degrees. If she had been home with us, I would have given her Tylenol and called her doctor, but she was five hours away. We decided she should go to an urgent care clinic. Once at the clinic, I had to give my mother-in-law Charis's insurance information. FYI, in the future, I plan on copying my children's insurance cards and giving the copies to my in-laws so they have copies in cases like these. It turns out, Charis had the flu caused by influenza A. She's finally feeling like herself, but she'll remain in PA through Christmas. On Saturday, Lil' J. and I will join her. Drew is staying in Maryland over Christmas, since he still has more data collection for his dissertation.

Old Factory Candle Gift Set #Review #Giveaway

One of my favorite decorations are candles, especially during the winter when it's cold, dark, and dreary outside. A reward I often give myself for daily wiping the bathroom sink is lighting a candle afterwards. They make homes much more homey.

Ribbed Baby Longies

I started knitting a pair of ribbed baby longies for my niece. My sister told me that she wears 2T clothes, but when I saw M. at Thanksgiving, there was NO way the longies I started to knit would stay up on her. So I went back to the drawing board. I am not unraveling the longies, instead I'll finish knitting them later for someone else. I went back into my stash yarn and picked out Paton's classic wool {New denim, Wisteria, and Royal purple} and Cascade 220 paints {Denim storm}. Cast on 88. K1P1 ribbing. Included an eyelet row since my niece is so skinny and my need to have an i cord to keep the pants up. Each side has P1K1 ribbing for 11 stitches.

Uno, Dos, Tres, Posada! #Review

Charis loves reading and enjoys learning Spanish. Her father helped give her the desire to learn another language. Drew has his Bachelor's degree in French, Spanish, and Political Science and received his Master's degree in Spanish translation. When Drew does not want Charis to pick up on what he is saying, he speaks to me in Spanish. Charis wants to be like daddy and learn Spanish. As a result, I have gone to the library to check out books, CDs, and DVDs to help informally educate her.

With Christmas coming, I decided to check out Uno, Dos, Tres, Posada! Let's Celebrate Christmas by Virginia Knoll. Throughout the book, the author uses the format, "I say uno and you say one." Following each rhyming phrase, a Spanish word or phrase is introduced to the reader. The illustrations and context allow the reader to easily understand the Spanish word or phrase.

At the end of the book, Virginia included an author's not explaining that "A posada is a party that is held on each of the nine nights before Christmas (Navidad)." She then goes on to write about the activities that happen leading up to the posada and what you would expect to see and taste during the party.

This book is perfect for pre-school aged children. I highly recommend it, especially if you want to introduce your child to Spanish this time of year.
