One tool I use with my daughter Money Savvy Pig sold by Money Savvy Generation. What is Money Savvy Generation? It's a
child-friendly educational program that teaches personal finance basics in a fun, approachable way... The eight lessons include: History of Money, Where Does Money Come From?, Kids Can Earn Money Too, Saving, Smart Spending, Donating, Investing and a Family Money Press Conference. Each kit includes a parent handbook, student workbook, presentation CD with over 100 images and music, an activity book and a 4-chambered Money Savvy Pig bank. Ideal for Ages 6-11. The banks come in these different styles: cow, football, soccer ball, or pig (pink, blue, green, or purple).
What I like about the piggy bank and curriculum:
There are four chambers in the bank:
I like the chambers because it gives my daughter a visual representation of how long she has to wait before spending money. At the bottom of the bank, there are four openings to the different chambers.
It comes with a sticker sheet. Your child can help decide what stickers go where. I liked that included on the sticker sheet was a church.
After looking at the curriculum, I decided that my daughter might be a little young to work on most of the curriculum. (It's recommended for those 6-11.) But, I have still gone over the key points of the lessons informally with her. Her favorite part was the musical songs, plus it comes with a CD to help parents sing the songs with their children. We learned a new vocabulary word: barter (from "In Ancient Times"). After hearing the "Kids Can Earn Money, Too", my daughter said, "I want to make money knitting!!" So the last few days have been spent teaching her how to knit. When Charis drew her short-term goal, she drew a donut for Dunkin Donuts, since we go there about once every other week. Her long-term goal was to save money so she can buy Christmas gifts for her "Grandma & Grandpa" and "Granny & Grandad".
There are four chambers in the bank:
- Save: for items you want to save up for.
- Spend: money you're planning to spend soon.
- Donate: for your favorite charity. (We teach our children to give a tenth of what they get and give it back to God-to tithe.)
- Invest: money you plan on investing in the stock market for the long term.

This sounds like a great resource to add to our homeschool curriculum for next year. I love the 4 chambers in the bank to teach children that tithing and donating are part of what we do with money, not extra.
ReplyDeleteI like the cow but my kid loves the pig and well I think this is a really good way to teach saveing money
ReplyDeleteThat's a cool idea for a piggy bank! I need one of those for myself!
ReplyDeleteThis is so cute. Love the idea of the 4 chambers. Much easier to teach them how to separate their money this way. Definitely keeping this in mind for when I have kids. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteThis is such a great method - we have actually used it with my oldest and we were just talking about when to do it with the second now that he is getting older. ;)
ReplyDeleteI'd go with the soccer bank because we work for a soccer ministry organization & my oldest is a soccer fanatic!!
ReplyDeleteSo cool! It looks like this piggy bank/curriculum would line up well with the Dave Ramsey stuff that my wife and I have gotten into lately.
ReplyDeleteSince we have cows, I'd have to say the cow!
ReplyDeleteI would pick the pig.
