Words of Comfort for the 2016 Election #NaBloPoMo2016

Growing up, I LOVED the Republican party-a little bit too much. It was like an idol for me. My dad was heavily involved in campaigns in the late 80s and early 90s. He would often joke that I "made him look like a Democrat." Around 2000 (thanks to going to a Christian school), my view of the Republicans started shifting. I noticed how much Christians viewed George W. Bush as a god. They would often refer to Al Gore as "the antichrist" and spoke about the "destruction of America" and how the "end times was going to happen if Al Gore became President". (Note: I completely disagree with their end time theology.) Even at 16, these comments made me realize how much I fearing the President of the United States above God. In 2004, I voted for Bush (don't throw stones). But in 2008, 2012, and this year, I did not vote for either major party, instead I wrote someone in who more closely aligned with my principles.

This morning, I see a lot of my friends on social media upset about the election, worried about what will happen, or uncertain in the future. If you are a Christian, I hope these Scripture verses will provide comfort to you:

Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God. ~Romans 13 v. 1

God has given us Donald Trump, just as He gave Barack Obama, George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, etc. He used those in the United States of America to vote for these men.

He changes times and seasons; he removes kings and sets up kings (or Presidents); he gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to those who have understanding. ~Daniel 2 v. 21

God is sovereign; He is in control of all things. My prayer is that God would give Donald Trump and his advisers wisdom.

Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the LORD our God. ~Psalm 20 v. 7

We are ultimately put our trust in God. Yes, participate in voting for Presidents, Governors, Senators, Mayors, etc., but regardless of the outcome, put your trust in God. He works in events for His glory, though we may not understand His reasons. God uses sinful people to bring about his plans. The world should not look to man (or woman) to save us, instead we should be looking to Jesus Christ. We should be placing our trust on Him. He alone can save us.

What are your thoughts on this election?

  1. My story is very similar to yours. My father is a retired government agent (homeland security) so each time we voted we were electing his new boss for the next 4-8 years. In recent years I have too come to notice just how much America worships the political positions of power. I have been clinging to the hope and reminder that Jesus is King no matter who He has placed in the Oval Office. He will reign. Thank you for the verses of encouragement.

  2. Words very well written! God is in control, and God is in control of who's in control.
